Howe Cemetery
[Corrections and Additions appear below: Compliments of Linda Day Vourlogianes]
In 1799, Methodist Church had no home in East Pike Run Township. There were just
the families of Howe, Riggs and a few other followers. Holding meetings around at
the homes of the Christian people. About the year 1880 Mr. Howe gave an acre of ground
for Church and burial place. The other people gave of trees and labor, soon they
were busy building a Church home when Mr. Billy Howe died and his body was carried
over the logs used in building to his grave close by. He has quite a memorial on his
tombstone. The church was called The Howe Church M.E. He acquired the land he donated
and a large plot from the Indians. Traded a sidesaddle for 1700 acres. Andy Gregg,
gave the second acre and to-day the graveyard is incorporated and a beautiful large
Burial Place.
During the year 1843 - 44 - 45,the subject of Slavery was agitating the
Methodist Church. The controversy was carried on for a long time. Some claiming
Slavery was incompatible with Christianity. Others claiming slavery was a political
organization, and none of the Churches business. The discussions finally became so
heated the Church split. The dissenting Party becoming The Wesleyan Methodist –
the others Methodist Episcopal.
To-day the church is a beautiful white frame. Located on top of a high hill beside
the graveyard.
